International City/County Management Association (ICMA)
Description
The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) is the professional and educational organization for chief appointed managers, administrators, and assistants in local governments throughout the world. Supporting its mission to create excellence in local government, ICMA's participation in the Leadership for Healthy Communities assists government leaders as they create and promote policies, programs, and places that enable active living and healthy eating at the local level.
Active Living Initiative
ICMA provides a wide range of educational opportunities and resources on active living to chief appointed officials across the country. Recognizing the importance of peer-to-peer learning and networking, ICMA has developed a program that enables its members to serve as Active Living Ambassadors (or peer advisors) for other local government managers in their state or region. In addition, ICMA has sponsored educational webcasts to highlight innovative active living and healthy eating management efforts and principles. The Webcasts have been promoted to multidisciplinary teams of local government leaders and department heads. ICMA also prepares presentations and writes and disseminates practical reports, technical articles, newsletter and magazine articles, and various Web site resources related to active living and healthy eating.
ICMA partnered with NACo in 2004 to survey local governments about their challenges and needs related to active living, and has used the resulting snapshot of American communities to appropriately tailor its activities. ICMA proposes to survey members in 2006 with updated questions that include issues related to healthy eating, and anticipates sponsoring a series of three regional workshops in the Southeast to look at ways local governments and schools can collaborate to better promote youth health and wellness.
