National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA)

Description

NGA's Center for Best Practices helps governors and their key policy staff develop and implement innovative solutions to governance and policy challenges. As a leadership partner, the Center provides assistance to governors and their staff related to active living, public health, quality of life, and economic development.

Active Living Initiative

The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices's active living initiative provides tools, resources, and expert training to state leaders interested in developing community design and land use planning policies to increase opportunities for physical activity and access to nutritious foods. Recent publications have highlighted state strategies that support communities in their efforts to design vibrant, walkable communities, and increase access to nutritious foods by helping to site supermarkets in underserved communities. The Center's work is currently focused on the development and implementation of state polices to help curb the rising rates of youth obesity. To support the states as they develop and implement policies, the Center will be publishing resources on the preservation of farmland and access to nutritious foods; the siting of schools and related effects on children's health; and the redevelopment of communities and how redevelopment can provide opportunities to incorporate healthy community design.

In addition to published resources, the Center works directly with governors, their policy advisors, and senior executive branch officials through a variety of vehicles, including multi-state meetings, a working group, and conference calls. The Center also provides free, tailored technical assistance to governors and their advisors upon request.
